    Christians & politics

just a simple question I was thinking about.... what political issues should Christ-followers care about?

of course there's that term "evangelical Christians" that comes up so often when discussing politics and how certain people will vote, and then there's the Christian right and left. I'm more surrounded by the former, so I know they tend to vote largely based on family values issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage (plus fun stuff like creationism in schools, etc.). of course they take other issues into consideration, but I think those are the issues that typically drive them to vote Republican.

what I'm wondering is, what issues do the Christian left vote based on, generally? I don't want to make any guesses cause they'd be pretty much stereotyping, but it's something I am curious about.

I'm not attacking any opinions, of course. I just want to come up with sort of a list of issues that people who follow Christ should care about and consider worth voting based on. better yet... what political issues does Jesus care about? I would place family values issues on his list, maybe social justice... but beyond that I'm kind of gray.

edit: by the way, The Godfather (book) is very good. definitely read it if you have the chance.

  • what's neXt?

came back from Cru's neXt conference this weekend, really great time. learned a lot about having the right perspective on life, no matter what path God takes me on.

great lessons indeed. anyone who'll be junior or senior next year and have the opportunity to attend, definitely go for it.

on a side note, Chipotle is some of the best food on the planet. makes my mouth water (again) just thinking about it. absolutely delicious.

  • I'm a bit pissed, but God can take it

a wise man once told me that God can take our frustration, our anger, our bitterness, as long as we continue to seek His face, His glory, and His will. I have to admit I'm in such a place right now, and it's really hard for me to believe Jeremiah 29:11 right now, even though it's one of my favorite verses.

I'm a bit bitter about my employment situation. I know I should trust God with it, but it's hard to have faith when it seems like nothing's coming of it.

guess it's time to pray and fast again. been long enough. anyone wanna join in? we can bring our concerns to God together, and fast and pray for each other. where two or more are gathered Jesus said he'd be right there. any takers?

wow, what a conference. forever memorable in terms of lessons as well as events! definitely best new years ever.

brought Rob to see some ANQ family living not too far from the DC area, had to take the metro to get there. as we approached the station, a random family gives us exactly two daily passes for the metro, saving us God knows how much on tickets to and from PG Plaza, not to mention the calculation I would've had to do. thank you, God! we had a hilarious story on the trip back that some of our friends have heard... ask Rob if you want to hear it.

stayed up all night new years eve playing signs, pabo, charades, wrestling, doing gymnastics, watching people jump over tables... crazy night. we all crashed together very gradually, and it got funnier the longer we were together. really glad I spent the night chilling with them, gotta be the best new years ever.

in terms of lessons, Auntie Anne preached a really powerful message on how God can heal the hurts in our lives if we will have the courage to confess our wrongs to one another, which is different from bringing them to God. I think everyone expected a cliche message from her, something like "trust God, keep your eyes focused on him, and he'll work miracles for you like he did for me!" but actually she hardly talked about pretzels, and when she was about to go into how Auntie Anne's started, she just told us to read the book coming out in March. she was really mostly about sharing a painful time in her life and how God delivered her, and it was very powerful. and she did mention how God can use you and bless you even in times of darkness, as she was still in a cycle of guilt and shame while the pretzel business flourished.
